Computers Motorola XOOM vs Ipad Review

After the launch and big success of the Apple iPad, it was just a matter of time until a proper competitor from Google will be launched. The answer to the iPad came in the form of the Motorola XOOM Tablet PC. In the following article we will review the Motorola XOOM, its performance, specifications and general experience.

The Motorola XOOM is a tablet PC based on the Google Honeycomb mobile operating system, and is a result of a cooperation between Motorola and Google. The XOOM comes with a 2GHz NVidia Tegra processor, which ensures that all applications run quickly and the XOOM runs generally very smoothly. The Motorola XOOM also comes with 1GB of RAM, compared to only 256MB of the iPad, which already makes it much stronger.

The XOOM also has a dual-core processor compared to only single-core processor of the iPad. Its 10.1" widescreen display with 1280x800 resolution ensure that you can watch movies in high quality, as it supports up to 1040p video playback and 720p video recording. The XOOM also has two cameras - front and rear-facing - 5MP and 2MP, accordingly, whereas the iPad has only one. This is a big advantage of the Motorola tablet that the iPad simply does not have.

One thing that is bad at the XOOM is the high cost of Verizon internet - 20$ per only 1GB of bandwidth, and $20 for any 1GB over that. This is a very overpriced package and is not recommended (and in fact, not needed for anyone outside the US). There is an advantage in which you can surf from any location in the US, but any user is highly likely to surf more than 5GB per month, which makes it a very bad deal.

A disadvantage in the XOOM is the fact that its memory cannot be extended, yet. It only has 32GB of memory, and to extend it one must use an SD card which is not yet activated. Motorola claims that in the next firewire update they will provide the driver to the SD card so it can be used to extend the memory and use more than 32GB.

In conclusion, the XOOM is a good tablet PC, much more powerful than the iPad and even cheap, which makes it a good alternative. It still has some minor problems such as little hard drive capacity but it is to be fixed very soon, making it a very good competitor to the iPad.
